Stop chat apps saving pictures to your camera roll
Why it matters
Picture a group chat for your family or your workplace. Someone sends a photo of a meeting whiteboard, a passport for a form, or something you'd rather not have. If the app saves it to Photos by itself, it now sits in your camera roll with your own pictures, and it takes up space. It may also be seen by anyone who looks through your camera roll, and shows up if you share your library.
WhatsApp on iPhone
WhatsApp says it automatically saves audio, video and photos sent to your phone, and that Save to Photos is turned on by default.
For all chats
- Tap Settings or your profile picture, then tap Chats.
- Turn off Save to Photos.
For one chat or group
- From the Chats tab, tap the chat or group.
- Tap the contact or group name to see Contact Info or Group Info.
- Tap Save to Photos and choose Never.
The choices are Default (On), Always and Never. WhatsApp also says that changing the main setting won't affect choices you've already made for specific chats or groups, so check your busiest ones.
Other chat apps
Messenger, Telegram, Viber, Signal and others each decide for themselves. Look in the app's own settings, usually under chats, media, or data and storage, for an option about saving to Photos. We haven't confirmed the exact wording in each app's official help, so we don't list steps for them here.
Apple's Messages keeps pictures inside the conversation. We couldn't read Apple's page on deleting them today, so we don't give steps here.
Clear what's already saved
- In Photos, tap Collections and look at the Recently Saved collection if your Photos has one. We couldn't confirm that pictures saved by chat apps appear there, so also scroll your library by date.
- Tap Select, choose what you don't need, and delete. If iCloud Photos is on, they're deleted from your other devices too.
- Deleted pictures wait in Recently Deleted for 30 days. Here's how that works.
Deleting a picture from Photos doesn't delete the copy on the sender's phone or in anyone else's chat.
How FirstHour helps, and what it can't do
FirstHour can't change another app's settings, and it doesn't look inside your chats: it checks pictures in Photos, not your chats in Messenger or Viber. What it can do is look through the pictures already in Photos, flag ones that may show a card, an ID or a code, and sort the rest into groups in Tidy up so you can clear what you don't need. It can miss things, and it doesn't check videos.
Questions
If I turn this off, can I still see pictures in the chat?
WhatsApp describes this setting only as one that stops media being saved to Photos, so the chat itself should be unaffected. If you want one picture, check that you can still save it by hand.
Does turning it off delete the pictures already saved?
No. It only stops new ones from being saved, so you still need to clear the old ones in Photos.
