Find My when your phone is off or offline
Seeing "Offline" or "No location found" is frightening. Here is what Apple says still works.
What Find My can still do
- Show a last known location. Apple says that if Find My can't show the current location, you can see the last known location for up to seven days in the Find My app. If more than seven days have passed since the device last sent its location through the Find My network, it shows "No location found". On icloud.com/find, the last known location is shown for up to 24 hours.
- Find a phone that is off, with the Find My network. Apple describes the Find My network as a crowdsourced network of over a billion Apple devices. For iPhone 11 and later, Apple says Find My can locate an iPhone for up to 24 hours after it's turned off (iOS 15 or later), and for up to 5 hours in power reserve mode (iOS 15.2 or later). Apple doesn't give a time for older models in the pages we read, so don't count on it.
- Tell you when it's found. On icloud.com/find you can choose "Notify me when found" to get an email when the device is online again. Apple's security guide says that when a missing offline device is located, you receive a notification.
- Wait with Lost Mode and erase. Apple says a device appears online and in Lost Mode only once it's turned on and connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data. If it's offline, a remote erase begins the next time it's online. Apple's security guide adds that you can't play a sound on an offline device or erase it remotely at that moment.
What must be on beforehand
These are settings on the iPhone itself. Apple says that if Find My wasn't on before the device was lost, you can't mark it as lost or erase it remotely.
- Find My iPhone. Apple says that if Find My wasn't turned on before the device was lost, it won't appear at icloud.com/find.
- Find My network. Apple says to turn it on to see your device even when it's offline, or powered off or disconnected. Apple's personal safety guide warns that if you turn off Find My and the Find My network, you aren't able to locate, lock or erase your device if it's lost or stolen.
- Send Last Location. Apple says it sends the device's location to Apple when the battery is low.
- Location Services for Find My, which Apple says you need to locate a device on a map.
Apple also says Find My availability and features might vary by country or region.
What to do now
- Look at the map. Use a borrowed phone, or follow Find My from someone else's phone. Note the last place and time it shows. Don't go alone to a place you don't know. Tell the police instead.
- Mark it as lost, even if it is offline. It takes effect when the iPhone is back online. Here's how.
- Ask to be told. Choose "Notify me when found" so you get an email when it reconnects.
- Hold off on erasing. Erasing can't be undone. Read when to do it. Don't remove the iPhone from Find My, because Apple says that removes Activation Lock. What Activation Lock does.
- Do the rest of the first hour: your network, your bank and your accounts. The full plan is here.
Apple says it will never contact you to say your iPhone has been found. Treat any message that says so with suspicion.
Before it happens
Check the settings above now. A thief who gets to Airplane Mode can cut the connection, so turn off its Lock Screen shortcut. Our country pages list who to call where you live.
How FirstHour helps
Plan B has a guided tip for Find My and keeps a first-hour plan you can send to someone you trust, so you aren't working from memory. FirstHour can't locate your iPhone, show it on a map or tell you why it's offline. Recovery location is planned for later and wouldn't replace Find My.
Questions
Does a thief turning the phone off end the search?
Not at once. If the Find My network was on and the iPhone is a supported model, Apple says it can still be located for a limited time after it's turned off. After that, Lost Mode and an erase wait for it to connect.
