Private photos on your Apple Watch, and what CarPlay reads out
Apple Watch: where a photo can come from
Apple says you choose an album to sync from your iPhone to your Apple Watch, and that new watches show the Favorites album until you change it. A Photos watch face cycles through photos you choose or through a synced album, and you can also shuffle your library by Featured or People. Apple says a new photo appears every time you raise your wrist or tap the display.
That means a picture in the synced album, or one marked as a favorite while Favorites is the synced album, can end up on your wrist. Apple also lists Sync Memories and Sync Featured Photos as options.
How to keep private pictures off your watch
- Check the synced album. On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app, go to My Watch, then Photos > Sync Album, and choose an album with nothing private in it.
- Turn off the extras if you want. In My Watch > Photos, Apple lists Sync Memories and Sync Featured Photos. Apple says that turning off Photo Syncing there stops syncing Memories, featured photos and your chosen album.
- Check your watch faces. Apple says that in Face Gallery you tap the Photos category and choose a style, then pick a source: shuffle your library (Featured or People), shuffle a collection, or add photos manually, up to 24. If you already have a Photos face, check which source it uses.
- Keep private pictures out of Favorites. Because new watches show the Favorites album until you change it, a favorited private photo can travel to a watch that still uses it. This is our advice.
Apple Watch notifications
In the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, go to My Watch > Notifications. Apple says that to use the same notification settings on apps that appear on both your watch and iPhone, you tap an app, then Mirror my iPhone. Apple says that if you turn on Tap to Show Full Notification, the full details appear only after you tap the alert, and that you can turn off Show Summary When Locked so summaries don't appear while your watch is locked. Apple's page doesn't say how pictures inside notifications are handled, so if that worries you, you could try these settings and test with a friend. This is our advice.
CarPlay: what Apple says
Apple says that with iOS 15 and later, Siri can announce your incoming messages in your car. With the feature on, Siri plays a tone, announces the sender's name and reads the message. If a message is long, Siri announces the sender's name and says only that they sent you a message, and you can ask Siri to read the full message. Apple's CarPlay page doesn't mention photos on the car's display. We can't point you to an Apple page about pictures on a car screen, so we won't say they appear there.
What you can control, as Apple describes it:
- On your iPhone, go to Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications, tap CarPlay and turn on Announce Messages. Tap Back, tap Messages, then choose Time Sensitive and Direct Messages or All Notifications.
- On the car's display, open the Settings app in CarPlay and select Announce Messages. Select Announce Options to choose whether messages will be spoken or not at the start of your drive.
Because messages are read aloud, you may want to think about who else is in the car before you turn announcements on. If you saw a picture on a car screen, we can't tell you why, but the app that showed it and its own notification settings are a place to start. This is our advice.
Keep private pictures out of reach
The watch's photos come from albums in Photos. When you move a picture into the Vault, FirstHour checks the locked copy first, then iPhone asks to remove the original from Photos. If you say no, the original stays in Photos and could still be in a synced album. Apple's pages don't say how fast the watch drops a photo removed from Photos, so check your watch afterward. FirstHour has no Apple Watch or CarPlay app, and it can't change your watch or car settings. It also can't tell you what was already seen. Originals you remove stay in Photos' Recently Deleted for 30 days.
For more on who else can see a picture on your phone, read a coworker saw a private photo, do hidden photos show up in search and hidden album or photo vault.
Questions
Does the Hidden album stop this?
We haven't found an Apple page that says how the Hidden album works with a synced watch album, so check your own watch after you move a picture.
